Director's Desk for Nov./Dec. 2010
Wow - the holidays are just around the corner and already upon us and we have lots of activities here at the Ashtabula Arts Center to help make your holidays even happier. Please take a moment to read over the many offerings available to "kids" of all ages and come in and enjoy the fun!!
On a sad and melancholy note, I am sorry to report that the Women's Service League of Ashtabula County has disbanded. This extremely dedicated and hard working group of ladies has provided the Ashtabula Arts Center and other arts organizations steadfast and deep financial and volunteer support since 1962. Unfortunately times have changed. Most women today work
outside the home. This has created very limited time available for most for volunteer activities. Women's Service League (WSL) is not alone in feeling the pinch of waning volunteers.
I would like to thank all the
members of WSL throughout the years for everything they have done to support the Arts Center. In the early years of it's
existence, the WSL members were required by membership to fill all the AAC's volunteer needs -- ushers, box office personnel, concessionaires, cooks,
seamstresses, mail stuffers, reception hostesses, etc. As time went on and more WSL members had "day" jobs, this requirement of membership was dropped. WSL still continued to annually produce at least two major fundraising events for the benefit of the Arts Center and other arts organizations. While many former WSL members will continue to volunteer and to
support the Arts Center, we are sincerely going to miss the
special kinship we have felt with this wonderful organization through the many years.
While we say good-bye to this old and dedicated friend, please understand the needs of the Arts Center continue. We know several former members of WSL will continue to donate time and money to help the AAC. These efforts are crucial to the on-going offerings and programming at the AAC. We hope that you may want to get even more involved here at the AAC. Please call us if you can lend some time or expertise.
Thank you Women's Service League for all you have done for the Ashtabula Arts Center and the arts in Ashtabula County over the years. You may be gone, but you won't be forgotten!

Volunteer News and Notes
Join the fun and volunteer today! We need you! 440-964-3396
Volunteers play a vital role at the Arts Center. Volunteers are needed throughout the year to work box office and concession stands and to usher and sell raffle tickets at each theater and dance performance; to cook, serve and clean-up at pre-show dinners during the fall, winter and spring seasons; to build and paint sets, sew costumes, run lights, and work back stage crews; to read stories or help children with craft projects at "Kids Day Out" programs throughout the year; to donate home-baked goodies and hors d'oeuvre trays for art openings, coffeehouses and music recitals; and to fold programs and stuff envelopes among numerous other things.
Arts Center volunteers are people from all walks of life, all ages and stages. What they have in common is the desire to make a difference in their community - and in their own lives - by giving of their time and expertise. Not only do they learn new skills, but by volunteering in their area of expertise, they teach their skills to others.
Youth volunteers have many reasons for volunteering: to discover their talents, to explore career options, to develop and act on their social awareness, to gain self-confidence, to build a sense of independence or to complete high school curriculum requirements. Volunteering is also a great way to help them get accepted into the college of their choice. College's look for well-rounded students and volunteerism is one of the things admissions officers love to see on a student's application. It shows that they are community minded and it will give him a decided edge over those who have done no volunteering.
For adults pursuing a profession or looking for a new job, volunteer work can do wonders for your resume. Volunteering shows that you are ambitious and enthusiastic and gives you noted experience.
Some people make volunteering a family activity. When time is short and the demands are many, family volunteering offers a wonderful opportunity to be together while contributing to the community. Older adult volunteers know that their lifetime of experience matters. Volunteering provides opportunities for them to use those valuable skills, to give back to their communities, to mentor others, and to create and maintain relationships.
Whether you have lots of free time or only a few hours here and there, the Arts Center would like to hear from you. Volunteer sign up sheets are located at the front desk or you can call (440) 964-3396 for more information.
